Founded in 1975 by lifelong friends

Two friends opened El Compadre on Sunset Boulevard in 1975 with one ambition: to bring the fine foods of Mexico to LA in a place that felt like an old-world hacienda. Clay roof tiles, stained glass chandeliers, and Mexican antiques set the mood from night one — and they still do.

The kitchen and its recipes

The philosophy behind every plate has never changed: traditional tastes, fresh flavors, not a single shortcut. Family recipes handed down across generations turn first-time guests into regulars.

The Flaming Margarita

Set ablaze tableside in more than fifteen flavors, the Flaming Margarita is the most iconic cocktail on Sunset Boulevard — a spectacle and a tradition in equal measure.

Every evening, a live trio fills the room with Mexican classics while amber bar light glows across the hacienda — equally right for a date, a birthday, or a post-Dodgers victory.

Still family owned, still here

El Compadre has grown to two locations — Hollywood and Echo Park — without losing the soul that defined it from the start. Family ownership, staff known by name, and a door that's always open.
